Marks & Spencer demanded of Living Landscapes Ltd., the creation of an atrium which now forms the hub of their Financial Services headquarters at Chester. The area is used for reception, restaurant/cafe, major circulation and occasional entertainments. The staff also use it for informal mixing, particularly at lunchtime.

The design used emphasises the very large floor space (850 sq. metres) and the double floor height. This achieves the effect of a cool, white space in which the shadows of the roof members and plants evoke a winter-garden atmosphere.

Planting is simple and elegant and spot colour is provided by groups of material which is periodically changed.

Establishment of plants has been excellent with the Ficus putting on 1 metre growth in the first twelve months.
